Brief Description:  Research on fuel tanks

I've been doing a lot of research on the fuel tanks and have read that many folks have a number of issues in the following areas:

1. Using the proseal to seal the tanks
2. Leaks from the tank access cover plate.

So, I found some great information at Bob Ellis's site http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jbtrellis/frames_index.htm about self-sealing nutplates that he used in his fuel tank construction after reading about it from Rick Galati at www.vansairforce.com. The self-sealing nut plates are actually NAS1473A08 nut plates that you can get from www.wicksaircraft.com. At $4.95 each, they are quite expensive, especially for 24 of them, but if it does a better job than the K1000-08 and saves me time down the road, it's well worth it. These are used in the certified world.

I also learned another method sealing the tanks by applying the proseal to the components, clecoing the components 100% with clecoes until it is between tack dry and full cure, and then wet rivet. So, it's something I will try when it's time.

So I purchased the self-sealing nutplates from Wicks, and also the stainless steal 8-32 pan head screws (part #90825A819) from McMaster-Carr and also the Metric VitonĀ® Fluoroelastomer O-Ring 1.5 mm Width, 4 mm ID (part # 9263K289). These go onto the screws to form the seal, and they will not be affected by the fuel.
